I have been serving on the board of directors of the Michigan Jazz Festival since 2020. I have considered education to be a top priority in my activity. I am the chairman of the group-selection committee and on both education and marketing committees.

Initiatives created by myself for the festival:

Zoom educational inititaves for the community. Along with Dennis Tini, we program 6 bi-monthly jazz education webinars or clinics on various topics that can be a free resource for the community at large.

Vocal Jazz Competition Fundraiser. In 2022, I created a vocal competition for amateurs. The finals were the 5-person finals. The winner sang with Ramona Collins in the Michigan Jazz Festival. The fundraiser was held at Aretha's Jazz Cafe, selling out the house.

MJF Survey. In 2021, I created a paper/online survey that allowed us to assess important information about the 2021 festival.

I worked with co-board member Vince Chandler in 2021 to create the Michigan Jazz Festival All-Star High School Jazz Band. The group is now a yearly feature in the festival.

In the Selection Committee, I created a new streamlined system in which to review bands. It has saved time and energy and empowered many new groups to play at the festival.
